News Analyze This: Eminem vs. Canibus
It would appear that Eminem is not just targeting the Vice-President, Britney Spears, Moby, Jermaine Dupri and Limp Bizkit. Despite what Hip-Hop heads thought, Slim Shady is going after an estabilished lyricist, who happens to be black (or for the politically correct: African-American) - Canibus!
To date, we've all witnessed Canibus' lyrical assault toward LL Cool J. Despite the mixed-outcome, the lyrics to Second Round K.O. was a devastating blow to LL's ego (not his career). Since Eminem's been on Aftermath, we've never really seen Eminem go at someone aside from Cage, which wasn't really a battle. Nevertheless, fans on both sides are anticipating that this battle will bring back the early 'Beasts From The East Canibus' and the 'Pre-Interscope Eminem'.
So how did all of this start? Canibus had a record on his 3rd album, C True Hollywood Stories entitled 'U Didn't Care'. The song implies, in a roundabout way, that Eminem was ghostwriting for LL Cool J. On the upcoming Eminem album, The Eminem Show, Em calls out Canibus numerous times on 'Squaredance'. "I'll be brief, let me just keep *#@% simple / Can-i-bitch, don't want no beef with Slim - No. / Not even on my radar / so won't you please jump off my dick; Lay off and stay off..." Knowning Slim's track record, there are probably multiple disses towards Canibus on the album that haven't even been found yet.
Regardless of the outcome, this battle will probably be the most important battle in Hip-Hop because it will be the battle that inevitably plays the race card. Lyrical skills should out weight skin-color. Far from a newcomer to on-stage battles, Breez Evahflowin', felt that the general public would not be able to get past color, but felt that "underground fans and listeners won't really be looking at the color, it'll be all about the punch stats." Smartsook, SOHH Moderator, hopes this battle takes off however he realizes "on the site it will be if you feel Eminem is winning it's because he's white or you're white and vice versa."
Regardless of skin-color, for either rapper to win effectively both rappers 'should' stay away from the race card. Canibus will have to stay away from reparations lyrics, while Eminem can not use the N-word - even though it rhymes so perfectly with trigger, bigger, figure and digger. Pulling the race-card is expected and it's a cheap shot. If you'll recall during the Blaze Battle 2000, many of the white rappers were compared to Eminem.
When asked who he would pick in a battle between the two, Breez put his money on Eminem. His reasoning? "I don't feel battle rappers who've never been in real battles. That recorded *#@% is cute but I've seen Eminem go head up with big scary niggas on Broadway and put his rep on the line and flip some sick *#@%. He's also won a gang of the bigger organized battles out there before the whole Dre shit...I gotta go with Em all the way on this one." [Make sure to check out Breez's site if you get a minute.]
It will be interesting to see how this pans out...stay tuned!
It has been 10 years since B.G. dropped his first album "True Stories" when he was only 14. Over the past decade he's had some ups and downs with his career, from hit songs like 'Bling Bling' to problems with drugs. Well he has left Cash Money Records and is striving to achieve success on his own label 'Chopper City Records' He is in negotiations with a few Major Labels and you can expect a deal to be struck soon. Do you feel that you was getting cheated by Cash Money?
No, not in the beginning I aint feel like that, it was really like 80% love, 20% business, I didnt feel like that at first.
Are you still contractually connected with them, do you owe them an album or anything like that?
I'm officially no longer a cash money records recording artists, Im straight chopper city, ya heard me?
Liz Weezy was saying that he done over 100 songs and was gonna pick out his best tracks for his album, so do you got a whole bunch of shit just recorded with them?
Yea, I mean, you know what I'm sayin, they got enough for a whole nother album on me, they got the hot boys album that we got finished, then they got songs that we was just doin ya know, yea they got alot of shit on me.
Do you know whats gonna happen with that shit? Is the hot boys album gonna drop?
I mean, that Hot Boys album, thats a hot product, you know what I'm sayin, it'll be a hot product, ya know? So, I dont know how they gonna play with that, I dont know if they gonna call all us to the table, and we come to some kind of agreement or whatever, but I cant see it droppin without us comin to some kind of understanding about whats gonna happen.
So if they dropped that album and asked you to come back and do the video, would that happen?
It depends....Oh Yea, yea I'll do the video, it'll be all about a dollar.
Do you know all the new artists on Cash Money?
I know Lac & Stone, I dont know Boo & Gotti. I know T.Q. & I know Mack 10, but I dont know Boo & Gotti. I know Lac & Stone, cause Stone out the Magnolia Projects and Lac from Uptown, so I know them personally, ya know, really know them, them other cats I dont even know them dudes. I aint tryin to get to know em.
You think that Cash Money has changed over the years? As far as, just starting out on the underground and going to a mainstream style?
Yea, Yea, in a way, I mean certain parts of what we was doin on certain areas of the game has been changed, but as far as me I aint lose none of my gangsta rythm, ya heard me? Yea, I'ma be me.
I heard rumors that Turk done left, you heard anything about that?
No, Turk..man as we speak, Turk in jail right now, ya know? Turk been jail for the past 7 months and I talked to him 2 nights ago and he ready to take off too
He is?
Yea, you know what I'm sayin, he gonna go with Chopper City Records
He gonna roll with Chopper City Records?
Yea
Do you know when he get out?
He Supposed to be going to Trial Tuesday
You dont think Weezy will ever leave Cash Money?
With Weezy its straight business you know what I'm sayin? Weezy done even fuck with him like we used to, weezy go there, do what he gotta do.
He supposed to be callin his new album 500 Degreez, I know you was doin a song with Juvenile recently, do you know if Juvenile has said anything about that title?
The quote that they had in a magazine was somethin about he namin his album 500 degreez, cause he feel he the hottest hot boy, he was sayin it towards Juve, but I'm a Hot Boy too, so he sayin he hotter than me too. All us when we by ourself or doin individual thangs, might call ourself the #1 hot boy, thats just how a nigga is, thats how a nigga feel, but when we amongst each other, we all equal. But Wayne aint ready for what he gettin himself into.

In all your time with Cash Money, did you ever think they would hook up with No Limit and do a couple of songs or could you never see that happenin?
No, no, no. Well really me personally, I got 2 friends that was under No Limit that I grew up with and thats Mac who is incarcerated now and soulja slim who incarcerated now. And as a matter of fact, Soulja Slim not on No Limit no more and me and him done a song together thats goin on my album. Mac was on my first Chopper City album.
When did you decide to start Chopper City Records?
When I felt as though its time for some new entrepreneurs, cause the other niggas gettin old, time to bring the rap game back to the streets ya heard me? Put that bling bling shit up for a minute, I'm sick of it.
Whats gonna be the first album that come out on Chopper City Records?
As of right now, we gonna go on and drop my album, cause my fans waitin on me, its a highly anticipated album, its just about that time for me to come back out and let the world know that BG aint goin nowhere, the name of my new album is called 'A Living Legend'
You got a release date for it yet?
I aint got no exact release date, but we goin for August.
Yall talkin to some major labels, tryin to get a deal?
I'm in the process of gettin a deal right now, I should be pullin in a deal in another week or 2.
Are yall gonna be collaberating with UTP on any projects?
Yea, off top man. Me and Juvey aint got no beef, matter of fact, me and Juve just done a song together (On Juve's tour bus, in his studio) and me and him bout to do another song together thats goin on my album.
Who did the production on that track?
Juve, beleive it or not.
Who's producin your album "A Living Legend"
Well i got 2 producers that worked on my album, dude named Ke-noe and another dude named Soulja. Puttin some young producers in the game ya know, time for them to get a little spotlight and let it be known that its more producers out there than Mannie Fresh, more than Timbaland, Swizz Beats, ya know? So I'm gonna give them a shot and let it be known that they got underground muthafuckas that can produce platinum hits too.
Who you got featured on your album?
Really with this album here, its like a comeback album, this like the most important album of my career, cause by me being gone for a lil period of time and by all the rumors that they had about me, by alot of shit that been goin on with me and revolving around me, I felt as though that the majority of my album had to me, to let them know I still can hold it down by myself, so I really wasnt lookin for too many features but my click.
Is Ke-Noe gonna be exclusively producing for yall?
Yea, he is as of right now.
I heard yall was lookin to make a Hot Girls group.
That aint nothin started right now, but whatever makes the money.
Are yall lookin for any more artists to sign to Chopper City Records?
Not right now, in the future we might pick up a few more artists, but right now my roster's full. I aint tryin to have no click like No Limit with 30 muthafuckas.
A while back I read something about you supposed to be making a movie about your life story? What happened with that, is that still gonna happen?
Its in negotiation right now.
You got any plans to do a clothing line?
Yea
What are you gonna call it?
I dont know if I'm gonna call it BG Wear, its gonna be some gangsta shit, it might be On The Block Gear, ya know what I'm sayin?
What are some of your favorite cd's to bump?
You know I'm a Tupac nigga man. But I like everybody, I mean theres so much shit be droppin back to back, I bump alot a shit. I bump Nas, I bump 8Ball & MJG. If its for me man.
You got any comments
Just let it be known, ya heard me, that Chopper City Records, bout to lock it dizown! | | | |
Xzibit Jumps Into The Ring With JD
5-22-02
First Jermaine Dupri dissed Dr. Dre and Timbaland in XXL, Dre and Timbo responded on "Say What You Say" from Eminem's The Eminem Show, JD then fired on a jackin for beats style track dissing all three of them. Now, Xzibit has jumped into the fray as any true homie would. On the new DJ Kay Slay mixtape, Say What You Say, Xzibit calls out Jermaine Dupri in a freestyle over The Clipse "Grindin" instrumental.
"If you're So So Def, then b*tch get a hearing aid / Ain't worth the gauge, you're heart pumpin' lemonade / Hook line and sinker you took the bait / Act your age, not your size, not your weight / every time you profess you makin' hits / Why you always got to sound like the next man's sh*t? / Went from Big, to Puff, to Snoop to Jay / Hey Jermaine, who's d*ck are you gonna ride today? / Couldn't wait to get the green light from Dr. Dre / never liked your f*cking ass any damn way...Speak now or forever hold a d*ck in your mouth / you ain't the mayor you don't run sh*t in the south / Scarface run the South muthaf*cka, you a peon / The underage b*tch in the Kelly tape getting peed on.."
Daily Hip-Hop News: JD Response To Dr. Dre
5-5-02
Remember last week when we reported about Dr. Dre Dissing Jermaine Dupri on Eminem's upcoming album? Well, the reply is already out there. In a rather 'surprising fashion', JD comes back at Dre and Timbaland using their tracks in a "jacking for beats" type way.
While Dre's dis was tight, JD goes for the throat:
"All you can say about me is that I'm short but my dough is long / Dr. Dre motherf*ck*r come on! / See I know you don't do half the work in the studio / plus you like letting n*gg*s play with your booty hole ... You same beat making, non-rapping individu-al / I was making what you make now when I was a child."

Daily Hip-Hop News: Roc-A-Fella Artist Freeway Names Ill Eagle Winner
4-11-02
After months of vigorous battles between SOHH emcees, a winner has finally has been lifted up out of the rubble and declared champon. SOHH emcee, Ill Eagle was crowned winner after getting the final nod from Roc-A-Fella Records artist, Freeway in the Roc Wit The Roc Contest.
"I'm excited, it's really a great opportunity for me," said Ill Eagle. "I've been working hard for a while trying to get my music out there and get my rhyme skills to the point they need to be at, so this brings me to a whole new level of just meeting people in the industry as well as attaching some credibility to my name by doing the track with the Roc. I have a feeling that if I work hard, I can make this opportunity open some doors for me."
The competition started in February where over one thousand emcees submitted their best rhymes. The list was narrowed down to 16 emcees in Round 2 who went head to head in a fierce text battle. Round three was cut down to eight emcees who submitted audio entries where heads could judge the the emcees' flow, voice and delivery. Four emcees were elimnated and the remaining four had a phone interview with Freeway.
"The conversation with Freeway was pretty fast," Ill Eagle described. "Basically I just spit for him and at first he was pretty quiet, then I had a few lines that were pretty funny and he laughed a bit, so I knew he was feelin it. After I finished he sounded pretty impressed...he said it was ill and said he was gonna call me right back. He called back about a minute and a half later and said I was the winner, so I was flippin out!"
Now Ill is setting up a time when to fly out to New York and hit the studio with Freeway and the rest of State Property. "I'm pretty sure we're recording a whole track, although I'm not really sure when or what it's gonna be on, but hopefully it'll pop up on something that gets released. Even if it shows up on a mixtape or something, I'm not looking for a deal, I'm just looking for some exposure. I'm real grateful to SOHH for this opportunity, I don't think I can express that enough. I just want to thank everyone that supported me and give a big laugh at all the people that were trying to throw negativity at me."

Daily Hip-Hop News: Motown Records Cans Benzino?
3-20-02
Seems like no matter how dope your beats are or how many names you got on your album, a hit record is still difficult to attain and rapper/Source co-owner, Benzino can testify to that. According to a report from Urban Expose, Motown Records has dropped Benzino after only moving 80,000 units of his 2001 album, The Benzino Project. The album was executive produced by Teddy Riley and featured guest appearances from Raekwon, Scarface, G-Dep, Fabolous, and others.
Apparently, the sales of the album were so bad that Benzino had to pay for the video "Shine Like My Son" after Motown refused fearing they would not be able to recoup from the investment. The Urban Expose report also suggest that Benzino's recording deal with Motown was in part signed in exchange for Motown and its artists to receive free advertising in The Source. The contract is posted at Urban Expose, but no word if these are official or a fake documents.

And, according to Limp's official fan site, Durst plans to head to downtown Manhattan and visit the remains of the Twin Towers. "I'm in NYC right now at the 4seasons waiting on DMX to get to the studio. I came here to do a song with him for his new soundtrack. I'm stoked. i think im going to ground zero tomorrow to be inspired," he wrote on his journal entry for 11/10/2001. Post-WTC, on an earlier September 25th entry, Durst had this take on his personal change: "Our NEW world is one of uncertainty. one thing we can be sure of is that we have each other. I'm an avid believer of life. my thoughts and feelings for life have been on the MOST sensitive level lately. I know all mankind can survive these times. We HAVE to take a step back and re-evaluate our takes on what life really means to us. ive spent too much time in my past just dwelling on problems that cause me personal pain and I'm just realizing how much bigger the picture is." Durst and company are also looking for a new guitarist to replace Wes Borland who just quit them last month. In the meantime, the group is readying an upcoming remix album, New Old Songs, that features the Hip-Hop likes of emcees such as Xzibit, Bubba Sparxxx and E-40, as well as super-producers such as P.Diddy, The Neptunes,Timbaland and DJ Premier; the latter of whom performed on stage with Limp Bizkit, right next to DJ Lethal, at the MTV 20th-Birthday Party back in August.

Daily Hip-Hop News: Erick Sermon (Officially) Attempts Suicide 10-2-01 Information from the New Jersey police department seems to indicate that seminal rapper Erick Sermon, 32, may have tried to kill himself last week. Initially, Sermon's J Records label reps explained that his recent intensive care hospital visit was due to a violent car accident he got into on the way home from a video shoot. However, according to official reports, on September 25, the EPMD emcee actually took a dive from a three-story window of an apartment of a womanfriend in Paterson, New Jersey. Police also stated that there was no reason to believe any criminal activity was involved in his fall and what's more likely is that Erick jumped himself. In the meantime, Erick's label continues to stick with their earlier "car accident" scenario. Sermon's Marvin Gaye laced "Music" was just making heavy rotation on radio and TV. And his full-length album, The Sermon, will be shipping out on October 23, 2001.
